Papa John Telling The Papa John Story
Two of the concepts that most intrigued me in this module were the tension between IRL and virtual and the idea of video synthesis, especially videos that are derived from sound and can be used to better understand and comprehend sounds that we are not used to hearing.
I was looking into video synthesis and I downloaded a phone application that renders low-res images using the phone microphone as input. That was pretty cool to mess around with on its own, but when I played the sound file of an image (like in the process used to glitch images in audacity last semester) and looked at the visualization on my phone, the images were reminiscent of ultrasound screenings and images from digital electron microscopes. These are tools that make visually manifest natural, real-world objects that are otherwise intangible and impossible to observe. They are a bridge between that which is real and that which is virtual. I liked that idea a lot, so I decided to make a representation of a “real” object using only digital means that is visually evocative of its “real” appearance (which is, paradoxically, inherently digital).
I made a short monochromatic animated drawing of an amoeba and saved it as a .gif and then played it as a sound file and received the sound information on my phone and then finally saved my phone’s visualization as another .gif.
The result is digital documentation of a digital organism that is based on an organism in real life and presented in a similar way but has no physical basis in the real world.
